The Mayor of Knowsley 2022/23: Councillor Eddie Connor

Each year, the elected members of the council choose a mayor for the coming year. The Mayor represents Knowsley at public events and ceremonies as well as civic events in other towns, cities and countries.

About the Mayor of Knowsley

Councillor Eddie Connor was born in Toxteth, Liverpool but has been a long-term Kirkby resident, living there for the last 63 years.

Eddie, who is a former pupil of St Marie's Primary School and St Kevin's Secondary School, married his wife Sue 47 years ago. They have two children and four grandchildren, all of whom have been educated, and live, in Kirkby.

Eddie's first job was at Liverpool Stock Exchange before he moved to Seel Street Garage to become a time served motor engineer. Eddie has also spent time working at Ford Motor Company and Bird's Eye Frozen Food Company.

In 1974, he embarked on a long career with Merseyside Fire Brigade, where he served as a firefighter at a number of local stations for over 32 years.

Eddie has also been a Magistrate in Merseyside for 27 years, starting in Huyton and now in Liverpool and is also a School Governor at a number of schools in the Kirkby area.

Public life

Eddie was first elected to Knowsley Council as a Councillor for the Northwood Ward in 1998. He has held a wide range of positions including being the Cabinet Member for several different portfolios including:

  • Leisure, Community and Culture;
  • Public Health and Wellbeing; and
  • Neighbourhood Services.

Eddie has also been involved in a wide range of other committees including Scrutiny, Licensing and Planning and has spent the last few years on on a number of bodies including the Knowsley Borough of Culture Members' Consultative Panel and the Health and Wellbeing Board.

Interests

Eddie enjoys an active lifestyle and is a keen member of his local Kirkby Leisure Centre. He is particularly enthusiastic about training and swimming. Eddie also enjoys a game of golf when the weather permits.

Mayoress

Sue Connor will be the Mayoress for 2022-23. Sue has been a resident of Knowsley for 66 years after moving here from Liverpool. She is a loving mother and grandmother of two children and four grandchildren.

Sue went to school in Simonswood Primary School then on to Ruffwood Secondary School.

After leaving school, Sue started working in an office for Rewind J Windsor. Her next couple of jobs were with Dickenson's on Kirkby Trading Estate then Delco in Kirkby. Sue then joined Holidays Supermarket, Quarry Green, Kirkby and has worked there for the last 37 years.

The Mayor of Knowsley's Charity Fund

For 2022 - 23, the Mayor will be supporting Friends of Bluebell Park

The charity was registered in December 2001. Its main objectives are to provide educational, recreational and sensory activities, experiences, equipment and resources for children and young people with disabilities.

Guidance for memorial events

The Worshipful the Mayor shall have precedence within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley subject only to the presence of Her Majesty the Queen or a representative of Her Majesty.

  • The responsible person at any event should meet the Mayor at the entrance on arrival and should introduce him to the host or to the assembled company.
  • When the Mayor is formally announced, those present will be asked to stand.
  • Unless the Mayor occupies the Chair, he should be seated on the immediate right of the person presiding.
  • Except for an introduction, unless otherwise agreed, it is usual practice that the Mayor should be the first speaker.
  • When greeting the Mayor, he should be welcomed with a hand-shake and addressed as ‘Mr Mayor’.
